At Cuero ISD Education Foundation, we are dedicated to fostering opportunities for students who exemplify academic excellence and a commitment to character and service. One such opportunity, made possible by the generosity of Willie J. and Eva G. Self, is the Willie J. and Eva G. Self Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship celebrates faith, community involvement, and the Christian values that Willie and Eva held dear throughout their lives.

A Legacy of Faith and Community

Willie and Eva Self were longtime Cuero residents and devoted Calvary Baptist Church members. Their lives were defined by their faith and their dedication to their community. Eva, who worked as a telephone operator for Western Union for over 20 years, and Willie, although not formally connected with the Cuero ISD Education Foundation, shared a deep belief in the value of education. They recognized the importance of supporting young people as they worked toward their futures and believed that the mission of the Foundation aligned with their desire to give back to Cuero’s youth.

Although they did not have direct ties to the Foundation, their desire to leave a lasting impact on the lives of students led to the creation of this scholarship. Through their generosity, Willie and Eva have established a legacy that reflects their core values—faith, service, and compassion.

A Scholarship Rooted in Christian Values

The Willie J. and Eva G. Self Memorial Scholarship is unique in its focus on faith and Christian character. It seeks to reward a deserving student who is an active member of a Baptist church and who embodies the principles of strong Christian faith. In addition to being involved in their church, recipients of this scholarship are expected to demonstrate Christ-like qualities in their everyday lives, reflecting the love, kindness, humility, and service that are central to Christian teachings.

This scholarship goes beyond academic merit, recognizing students who live out their faith in tangible ways. Whether through acts of kindness, leadership in their church, or serving others in their community, these students are examples of how Christian values can be integrated into daily life.

The Impact of the Willie J. and Eva G. Self Memorial Scholarship

By offering this scholarship, Willie and Eva’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. The scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also encourages students to carry forward the Self's commitment to faith and service. In a world that often emphasizes individual achievement, this scholarship is a reminder of the power of humility, generosity, and living a life of service to others.

For students who embody these values, the Willie J. and Eva G. Self Memorial Scholarship is an opportunity to be recognized for their dedication to faith and character. It is a testament to the belief that true success is not only found in academic accomplishments but also in the way we treat others and live out our values.

Continuing the Legacy of Giving Back

The Cuero ISD Education Foundation is honored to be a steward of this meaningful scholarship. We are deeply grateful to Willie and Eva Self for their vision and their commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders. Through this scholarship, their legacy lives on, reminding us all of the importance of faith, service, and community.
