Nurturing Futures: The George & Pat Olson Memorial Scholarship

The George & Pat Olson Memorial Scholarship, available through the Cuero ISD Education Foundation, is a heartfelt tribute to two dedicated Gobbler fans who left an indelible mark on the Cuero community.

This scholarship, established by their daughter Saralee Wittmer and her husband Charles, honors the legacy of George and Patricia Olson by rewarding a deserving student who exemplifies strength of character and a robust work ethic within the Cuero High School football program.

Meet the Olsons: A Legacy of Passion and Dedication

George and Patricia Olson moved to Cuero in 1965 with their children Saralee, Sharon, Susan, and George. From the moment they arrived, they became integral parts of the Cuero community, especially when it came to supporting Gobbler football. For over 40 years, George and Patricia were season ticket holders and dedicated members of the Gobbler Booster Club, always cheering on their team with unmatched enthusiasm.

George, known for his undying passion for the game, could be seen standing and cheering for touchdowns, impressive plays, or simply to uplift the players. His boundless energy and love for the Gobblers sometimes earned him curious glances from other fans, but that never deterred him. A unique feature of George's fandom was his beloved Gobbler cowbell, which he rang at every game until it was eventually banned by opposing teams in Cuero’s district. The cowbell found its final resting place on George's bookcase and was later presented to the Cuero High School athletic department after his passing.

Patricia, a constant companion to George at every game, shared his passion. The couple was always early to the stadium, arriving at least an hour before kickoff to soak in the atmosphere and prepare for the excitement of the game. The Olson children often accompanied their parents to these games, but it was Saralee who truly absorbed her father's love for football. Under George's guidance, she learned the intricacies of the game, fostering a deep connection to both the sport and the community spirit it represented.

The Heart of the Scholarship

The George & Pat Olson Memorial Scholarship isn't just about academic achievement or athletic prowess; it's about honoring the values that George and Patricia held dear. The scholarship seeks to reward a student who has shown exceptional character and dedication while participating in Cuero High School’s football program. This reflects George’s lifelong support for the underdog and his keen awareness of the players who may not have been the stars but demonstrated remarkable determination and spirit.

Continuing the Olson Legacy: More Than a Scholarship

Saralee Wittmer and her husband Charles established this scholarship to ensure that George and Patricia’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. The George & Pat Olson Memorial Scholarship is more than just financial aid; it’s a testament to the power of passion, community, and unwavering support. It celebrates the heart and soul of what it means to be a Gobbler, honoring two people who were more than fans—they were fixtures in the community, embodiments of the spirit of Cuero, and advocates for every player who donned the Gobbler jersey.

This scholarship is about celebrating the unsung heroes, the players who give their all, and the fans who support them no matter what. By applying for this scholarship, students become part of a legacy that values perseverance, character, and community—a legacy that George and Patricia Olson exemplified throughout their lives.
